Do you love to read in bed or in a chair, but get pain in neck, shoulder or back?

Do you need an adjustable book stands which gives you the power to adjust the height and the angle of the books, so that you can read in an ergonomic posture?

Do your read book that are large and heavy, and need a stand that can hold those as well?

Do you also read ebooks on your iPad, Kindle or kobo, and want a stand that can hold them too?

If the answer to any of the above mentioned questions is yes, then, I have chosen these adjustable floor stands for you.

5 Best Book Holder Floor Stands for Reading in Bed or the Chair

1- Levo Adjustable overhead book holder for books and eReaders.

Best heavy duty adjustable floor book stands Levo Adjustable overhead book holder for books and eReaders

I have already done a detailed review of levo book holder, so here is a short summary.

The feature that I like the most is, you can read books over your head while lying completely flat. The book will be parallel to the ground facing downwards. See, how much adjustable it is!

You can adjust the height and angle of this book stand to match your eyes level in any reading situation. You can read in bed sideways, on a chair, at a treadmill or while bathing.

It is easy to move around in your home, as it is supported on four wheels. Moving on a hard and flat surface is easy, but on a carpeted floor, it is difficult.

You can easily read paperbacks, or even the heavy hardcover books.

There are two knobs at the bottom which hold the books open while you read comfortably. These knobs also make turning pages easy.

Fixing and removing books from the holder is also easy, as it uses a simple velcro to hold books from the spine.

Levo is made of aluminum and has great build quality that makes it durable, and also justifies the price.

    Levo tablet stand g2

There are two versions. Levo book holder, and Levo tablet holder. If you want to read on an  e-reader, then your need to separately buy a tablet holder which will fit at the end of the arm.

If you only need to read books then get Levo Hands free book stand. It would be cheaper.

But if you also plan to read on ereader like iPad or kindle (which most of us do),  then get the Levo deluxe tablet floor stand powered stand with book platform kit.

    • Maximum weight: 4 lbs (Least sturdy of all, but enough for holding even the heaviest Books).
    • Length (Min-Max): 29 – 56 inches.
    • Top surface: 12″X 16.5″ wide.
    • Angle adjustable: 360 degree ( Most Angle Adjustable)

This video demos the adjust-ability of Levo G2 tablet stand. To use with books just replace the Tablet holder with the book holder accessory on the same floor stand.

2- Lecco Book Holder Floor Stand for Hands Free Comfortable Reading

Lecco Book Holder Floor Stand for Hands Free Comfortable Reading
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBNVqDF39Mc?rel=0

I have also reviewed the Lecco book holder in detail, so here is the summary.

It is a competitor to the Levo book holder with two major differences: The universal holding mechanism and the low profile base.

It has the same holder which can be use to hold books and e-readers. To attach the book to the holder, just insert one edge of the book, pull the clamp open, and fit the book inside.

Attaching iPad and kindle is exactly the same.

One thing to note is that your book height must be more than 6.7 inches and lesser than 11 inches. If the book is more than 11 inches height it will not fit in.

Turning pages is not the most comfortable experience either.

It can also be used as an over head book holder as described earlier in levo book holder.

Its wheel design requires the least clearance space under the furniture. That allows it to orient in locations which are not possible with other floor stands. The credit goes to its unique design of wheels.

There are two wheels on one side and the other side has fixed knobs. Half of the wheels are recessed into base which makes it move under couches and beds that do not have a lot of clearance under them.

Maximum weight Capacity: 4 lbs (Least sturdy of all, but enough for holding even the heaviest Books). Length (Min-Max): 29- 44 inches. Can hold books if: Book/eReader height is between 6.7’’ – 11.02’’ inches. Angle adjustable: 360 degree (Most angle adjustable)

If you  compare Levo VS Lecco, then Levo is better. It is because,  you can attach any size book with it, and it has a superior build quality. Page turning is also easier with Levo book holder. But if you get this, you will have to buy separe holder for tablets. Or if you buy the levo tablet stand, your will need to get the book holder separately.

3- Langria Rolling Cart Table Height Adjustable reading Stand Desk

LANGRIA Laptop Rolling Cart Table Height Adjustable Mobile Laptop floor reading Stand Desk

Although the image is showing a laptop on the stand, but it is also perfect for reading in bed, or in a sitting posture.

There are other similar stands that are only height adjustable, but this one has the feature to adjust the angle of top surface. This is necessary to orient the book at a perfect position.

It is not expensive, especially if your consider the adjustability and the loading capacity, and compare it to Levo or Lecco book holders. Those are almost three times the price of this one.

To use this stand while reading in bed, just slide it towards you, adjust the angle and height and start reading.

This do not have a page holder so your would also need that to read completely hands free.

There is certain limit on angle adjustment, which means,  cannot read books over head like you could do in above mentioned stands.

You easily take it anywhere in your house. Thanks to its fours wheels at the base. And if you want it to remain stationary, then it is simple too. Just lock the wheels.

    • Maximum weight Capacity: 22 lbs
    • Height of stand (Min-Max): 23.6 to 35.4 inches
    • Table top Area: 23.6 x 13.6 inches
    • Angle adjustable: 180 degree

4- Sharper Image Best over Bed Table, Sturdy Adjustable Tilt Table

Sharper Image Best over Bed Table, Sturdy Adjustable Tilt Table is a best floor stand for reading heavy books in bed.

It is a heavy duty and heavy weight floor stand that weighs about 40 pounds. It is made of real wood and the build quality is also great, due to which it is double the price of Levo floor stand.

Other tables that offer wooden finish are actually MDF or Particle board, laminated  with a wooden style sheet. But this one is made with read wook which makes it durable and long lasting.

You can adjust its height from 30 to 46 inches.

Plus, your can control the tilt of the table top. Your can set it at a maximum 50 degree angle on both sides. This is limited, but enough to hold books at a perfect angle, for the most part.

    • Maximum weight Capacity: 22 lbs
    • Height of stand (Min-Max): 30.10″- 45.75″
    • Table top Area: Tiltable: 27.25″ X 17.7″ + Fixed: 15″ X 17.7″ = Total: 42.56″ X 17.7″
    • Angle adjustable: 180 degree
    • Clearance under bed: 4.5″

Important: Your can adjust the gap between legs of the table from 50.4’’ to 74.8’’ which is good if your have a tiwn size(39x74inch), XL twin size (39x80inch), or Queen size bed (60x74inch), BUT it does not fit traditional King and California king size bed

    • Maximum weight Capacity: 350 lbs (Most sturdy of all. Definitely way more than what your need)

Best suited, if you want to read in bed without using your hands,  or you have Arthritis problem and could not hold the book,  or you want a simple and portable book holder for travelling,  then this pillow book holder is best for you.

Not suited, if you want a true multipurpose book holder for reading in bed, chair, while bathing, studying, or even exercising. Also, if you want to read in the correct ergonomic posture by adjusting the height and the angle of the books, you are reading.

A note about large hardcovers and stability of this book holder.

I have noticed after reviewing a lot of book holders that if you want the simplicity and portability, then you have to compromise with the adjust ability (angle and  height), and the stability of the books.

You have to choose whether you prefer a book holder that is easy to carry,  all the one which is very comfortable to use.

This book holder is good for hardcovers and large text books. There is no stability issues and it does not tip over either. You can see that yourself in the video mentioned below, but there are better book stands that offer even better stability, adjust ability, and handling of large books. Check them at alternative section.

  • Review: Lecco Floor Book Holder Stand for Books, Kindle or iPad

Lecco book holder floor stand with adjustable height and Angle for hands free comfortable reading.
Lecco book holder floor stand with adjustable height and Angle – Image Source

In this Lecco book holder floor stand review I will highlight its benefits and the limitations. At the end, you will discover the alternatives and when those will be a better choice.

After reading this review, you will be able to decide with confidence whether Lecco book holder floor stand is perfect for your reading needs or not?

Lecco floor standing book holder is a versatile holder for reading books and e-books in many different reading positions.

    Best suited, if you…

    • Want to read in bed or couch comfortably.
    • Read while bathing, cooking, studying, or exercising.
    • Read on a treadmill, elliptical, or exercise bike.
    • Are elderly who wants to read without holding the book.
    • Have some kind of disability, like Arthritis or Parkinson’s.

Unique Features of Lecco floor standing book and tablet holder

There are two other similar alternatives, namely Levo and The Hold it. They offer the same versatility and adjustability, but the Lecco has three things that make it unique.

    1. It base is thin as compared to the other two, That is why you can slide it even your couch easily. (More details discussed below)
    2. You do not need to buy a separate extension for book and ereaders and tablets like kindle or iPad. The universal stand works for both, the books and ebooks. There is certain limitation is size which is discussed in detail below.
    3. It is made of metal and the shiny silver look seems elegant. It is a subjective thing and you may prefer it or not, but other two stands offer  black painted look.

    Benefits of Lecco Book holder

Read in bed without hurting your neck

The stand helps you read in the most comfortable position in your bed. You can lie down however you want, and then adjust the stand to position the book in front of your eyes. Gone are those days, when you felt pain in your neck while reading.

Read in bed without using your hands

You just need your hands to first fix the book and then every time you turn the page. If you get tired by holding books for long time, you have any kind of disability, or you simple want to keep you hands warm and cozy in the winter nights, the Lecco book holder will make your reading, a joyful experience, again.

    Moves easily under the couch

It has a very heavy yet a slim base, due to which you can easily slide under your furniture, for example, you couch or sofa. It is not a big deal, but it is something that makes things a bit more easy. Now, it is easy to adjust arms as the base is near to you.

    Height Adjustable book stand

Whether you read in places which requires less height, like bed, couch, or while bathing. OR You read on a treadmill, elliptical or while cooking, where more height is required, this stand will fit perfectly if your required height is in these limits.

The most height you can extend Lecco is 44 inches, and the least height is 27 inches. It means, if you want to buy it for reading on a treadmill, then check whether it can elevate up to the required height or you need levo book holder which can extent even more.

    Angle Adjustable book stand

Not only height, you can also change the angle of the book or the tablet however you like. Let me explain by this example. Say, if  you want to read in bed while lying down completely flat. You want to place books exactly above your eyes facing downwards. You can easily do so. And this is one of the challenging postures to read. You can adjust the book holder however you like.

    Fits most books easily

It fits most books and e-readers easily, but not all of them. It works with only those books with height from 6.7 inches upto 11.02 inches. If your law or medical book is bigger in height Or you have some small books that are less than 6.7 inches in height, then those book will not fit in the book holder. Levo book holder is a great solution for this problem.

    Easy to assemble

It delivers to your home, semi assembled. You need to do the final assembly which is very simple, and takes less than half an hour.

    18 inch Arm Extension

With just a push of the hand, you can easily move the book in front of your eyes or out-of-the-way. It has an arms that extends up to 18 inches horizontally. To be exact, the distance is from the center of the book holder to the center of the pole.

The balance between mobility and stability

It has a unique base design which allows you to slide floor stand under the couch. It requires very less clearance space.

Sturdy Heavy duty stand for large books and writing

It is made of metal that not only look stylish and elegant, but also give sturdy support to the books or the tablets/kindle. The total weight of the stand is just below 20 pounds. It means, whether you use it for reading large books (up to 5.5 pounds) or you want to write on bed, this will not tip over, specially on the hard floor. On soft surfaces like carpet, it tends to bend on a side. Levo, which is very similar to this one, also has this issue on carpet floor. The solution is to either use it on hard floor or the other alternatives, if you want to read heavy books.

    Fits books and e-readers, Mostly.

This book holder can fit books or the e-reader on the same holder. You do not swap the holder extensions like Levo book holder. This is its plus point. For detailed comparison see this post.

    Limitations of Lecco Book holder

    • Will only work with 6.70’’ – 11.02’’ height of books/e-readers. Say, if you want to read on a small tablet that is 5’’ x 9’’, then you can place it vertically and not in the landscape orientation.
    • A bit heavy to move on carpet

    Summary of User Reviews

Most of the users love this book stand. They got relief from neck and back pain. This gives them the ability to enjoy reading in bed for long periods. They find it sturdy and well built.

Some users do not love how it performed on the carpet floor. They find it difficult to move, and when in use, it bends a bit. This is because of the design of the base. There are two wheels and two solid rests at the base. On carpet, the solid rest points gets into the soft carpet, bending the overall stand. Also, at full extended arm, it become a bit flimsy.

  • How to read in bed without hurting your neck?

How to read in bed without hurting your neck?

To read in bed without hurting your neck, you need to follow a combination of these 4 things: Read in the natural or ergonomic posture, Use a Stand to hold book or tablet at the right height and angle, Take breaks after every 20 to 30 minutes, and strengthen your muscles by doing specific exercises.

    Read in the natural posture.

You must read in the correct ergonomic posture so that every part of your body is well supported and there is not excessive stress on any single part, like your neck, or back.

    Use reading stand

Use reading stands to maintain that posture easily. They will hold the book in the perfect angle and at the perfect height.

    Take breaks

Take regular breaks to relax your body. Or You can change the reading posture. It is also a break. You need to do it every 20 or 30 minutes.

    Strengthen your muscles

Storing muscles bear if there is any imbalance in your posture. Do some exercise to strengthen your neck, eyes, and shoulder muscles.

    1. Read in Natural Posture

You must read in the correct posture such that, there is no excessive stress on a any one part of your body like your neck, or back. You may call it the neutral or the best ergonomic posture. This posture will prevent your body from getting over-stressed. This is the key if you want to read for long period without any pain in your neck, back or shoulders.

But the problem is, you cannot maintain ergonomic posture for long time. The solution is two-folded: 1) Use a reading pillow to support, and keep your body in the ergonomic posture. 2) Use a Book holder stand to position the book in-front of you eyes at the right height and angle. That way, you neck muscles will be at rest. Hence, you will not

How to check if your posture is correct or not?

Our bodies are designed in such a way that one part of the body gets support from the other. It is like a chain. Every link matters.

Image result for correct standing posture

Focus on the head and neck section of the above shown skeletons.

You will notice that the natural posture is when the weight of your head is evenly distributed on your neck. It is the Ideal or Good posture.

If you are thinking how this relate to lying down posture? Then I would say- everything!

Just imagine the above picture turned 90 degree. Now, it is the position you lay down in bed.

And in this position, you head should not be too high.

The best ergonomic posture is lying down straight.

But it is difficult to maintain that posture, because for that you need to hold books over your head. This would be painful for your forearms.

First solution is to use a book stand that will hold the book over you head, without you even touching the book. Check reading stands for neck pain.

The second solution is to support your body with Backrest reading pillows while reading in bed.

Here is a great video that shows it.

Or you can use a combination of both solutions, that is, use a reading stand and support yourself with the pillows.

Now, this next video shows the right posture to lie down correctly. In my opinion, this is 90% correct. The 10% which is not correct is the placement of hands.

That is where you need a stand. To free your hands as well.

    Anyway, watch this video.

    2. Take Regular Breaks

This is the second step towards ensuring that reading in bed is not causing you neck pain.

    Why?

It is helpful in releasing any stress that have build up in your muscles due to the prolong inactivity of the body, or the bad posture.

Taking breaks is so powerful, that even if you do not maintain the right posture, you will still feel good. You might not be able to read for hours, though.

Breaks increases blood circulation in your body and releases the pressure of nerves.

That is why, there are very less chances of getting strained, if you properly take breaks.

    When to take breaks?

There are researches done which prove that you must take break after every 20 minutes. Have you heard of that popular productivity technique called Pomodoro?

The people who follow Pomodoro technique, take small breaks after every 25 minutes, and a long break after 4 Pomodoro (A dedicated session of 25 minutes)

So, take after every 20 minutes.

    How to Take Breaks?

    1. Relax you neck muscles by moving your head. Slowly look up, down and sideways. Rotate your neck clockwise and anti clockwise three times each side.

Here is Dr Jo, showing some stretches that you can do during the breaks.

    2. As I mentioned earlier, our body is like a chain. The neck is not isolated. It is connected to shoulders. So move your shoulders and arms as well.

Here is another video to watch:

    3. And now comes the lower portion that is linked to the neck as well. Remember the chain effect? Good!

For that, just simply walk for a couple of minutes, look here and there. And you are done.

If that sound too confusion or excessive work then you should think about the pain and pleasure principle.

Learning how to properly take breaks and then actually implementing that will save you form trouble in long term.

The time you will invest in learning these stretches and practicing them will give you higher returns in future.

You will be able to read for long hours and do that constantly for years to come. Is it exciting?

    4. And now, the bonus tip. Relax your eyes as well. Look farther for a few seconds and then look at an object near to you. This video demonstrates that in detail.

    Strengthen your Neck Muscles

    Why?

If you do exercises while taking breaks, you muscles will get stronger, and then even if you read for long hours, your muscles will support them. they will bear that excessive pressure.

Strengthening muscles requires you to do exercise and put your body to motion, which is its natural state. That is how, you basically balance the time of inactivity, while getting a long term benefit of stronger muscles.

This step make your body stronger so that even if you read in incorrect posture, or do not take breaks, the loss will still be very less. You will not feel that pain in short or long term.

    How?

Here are two videos that will demonstrate the exercises.

    Final thoughts:

    Mix or Choose.

Imagine, there are three layers of protection around your body, and each one protects you from Neck pain.

Then the most outer circle would be the step 3, strengthen your neck muscles. If this one is not there, or fails somehow, your correct posture will protect the damage. But if you start feeling pain in your body, then the most inner circle of protection will be to take break and release that stress.

So use all these three things I have discussed, or apply any one of them, and you will feel the difference.

About all the videos I have listed. Just watch them once, and start trying those exercises. You do not have to do all in one day, just take it easy and do whatever you can. Remember, What is the worst exercise? The one that is never done! So take action now, and free your self from Neck Pain. It is not cool. Right?

    The Basic Principle.

You have to understand the basic principle.

Our bodies are not built to stay at one place. They are build to move.

There are a lot of bones, and a lot of joints. All of this is designed, so that we can MOVE!

But when we go against that principle, by keeping it stationary, we are actually doing harm to our body.

In that case, we must try to balance it some movements, proper posture. And train our body to withstand that harm by doing exercise and strengthening our muscles.

    It is not Subjective.

Some people call it subjective, but I think, that is not true. Especially, if we talk about older people above 60 or 70 years or the ones who do both of these things.

    1. Read a lot
    1. Read daily

Because if you read  occasionally, for example

You read on a beach, in mountains, in a club,  or in a park, on weekends, then your body gets the time to recover from the fatigue.

But, if you read a lot, and do that daily, then you must make a habit of reading in the best ergonomic posture to protect yourself from long term back, neck, or eyes, pain.
